Unseeded Baghdatis Faces Federer In Final

Unseeded Marcos Baghdatis reached the Australian Open final where he will face world number 1 Roger Federer.

Baghdatis pulled of a memorable victory by beating David Nlabandian in the semi final 3-6 5-7 6-3 6-4 6-4.

Baghdatis, who has never made it past the fourth round in Grand Slams did it the hard way, coming back from two sets down before clinching the most important victory of his career.

“It’s amazing,” he said, ” I have to wake up, I think it’s just unbelievable.”

“Everything is like the first time here for me. Getting to the quarters was a first time and then the semis, and now I hope it continues on Sunday night.”

Nalbandian, who was fully expected to win, was left mystified by his failure to do so.

” It was quite tough,” said the 24-year-old. ” He’s a very good player. I had a lot of chances to win the match, so I can’t understand how I missed that opportunity to win it.”

For Baghdatis though it was a dream come true but he now faces an even bigger challenge when he faces Roger Federer, the world’s best player in Sunday’s final.

Federer had a far easier time of it in his semi final against Nicolas Kiefer where he won in four sets 6-3 5-7 6-0 6-2.

No doubt Federer will be odds on favourite to win yet another slam or maybe there’s a surprise in store - either way Sunday’s final promises to be a great one.
