Man Utd And Liverpool Through To Fifth Round
Both Manchester United and Liverpool made it through to the fifth round of the FA Cup.
United had a comfortable 3-0 victory over Wolves while Liverpool just edged past Portsmouth 2-1.
United’s victory was impressive and they were in complete control throughout the match.
Already 2-0 up at half time with goals from Richardson and Saha the next goal was going to be crucial. Within minutes of the second half Wolves could have scored through Cort and they had a brief spell of sustained pressure but seconds later United put the game beyond reach with a delightful third goal from Richardson.
Ji-Sung Park showed tremendous determination to battle his way past Lee Naylor and find Van Nistelrooy in the penalty area and the Dutchman patiently waited for his opportunity to clip a cross for Richardson to head in his second goal.
Liverpool were helped on their way at Portsmouth by a fortuitous penalty award - Dejan Stefanovic harshly penalised for hand ball - which allowed Steven Gerrard to shoot home.
They went 2-0 up when John Arne Riise netted on 40 minutes by firing past keeper Dean Kiely from an acute angle.
Early in the second half Portsmouth pulled a goal back, Sean Davis flicking a header past keeper Jose Reina, but Liverpool held on in a tense finale.
United and Liverpool will now hope to avoid each other in today’s draw.
