Hingis Return Capped By Mixed Title

A resurgent Martina Hingis capped her impressive return from retirement by claiming the mixed doubles at the Australian Open with Mahesh Bhupathi.

Hingis and Bhuptathi entered the tournament as wild cards but saw off sixth seeds Daniel Nestor and Elena Likhovtseva 6-3 6-3.

It was a remarkable return for 25-year-old Hingis who also reached the singles quarter finals.

This was her first mixed doubles crown but her 15th Grand Slam title.

” If anyone asks me why I came back, this is why - the dream of being back on court, of winning major titles, ” said a jubilant Hingis.

Bhupathi said he jumped at the chance of playing with Hingis.

” As soon as I saw she was playing, winning matches, I just kind of shot a quick email to her agent, ” he said.

” Fortunately, I got the positive answer and the rest is history. ”
