Sunderland Sinking Fast

Middlesborough beat Sunderland 3-0 in their first win in the Premiership since 20th November.

This was yet another body blow for Mick McCarthy and his team who are anchored desponently at the bottom of the Premiership with just 9 points from 23 games.

With goals from Emanuel Pogatetz, Stuart Parnaby and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbank, Middlesborough’s manager, Steve McClaren was understandably pleased with his teams response to recent results.

“It was not so much about the performance as the result,” he said.

“We needed a win. The players deserved it, they have been under a lot of pressure but showed tremendous spirit.”

For Sunderland though there is no way back from their unhappy position.

“We just have to keep going and keep doing the things we believe in, but the last two performances have been very, very poor,” lamented their manager Mick McCarthy.

“It’s a hard league and a lot of our players did not have Premiership experience. When we have made mistakes we have been punished and they are finding it tough.”

Elsewhere Fulham beat Tottenham 1-0 while Wigan drew with Everton 1-1 and Charlton and West Brom fought out a goaless draw.
