Murry Wins First Title

Britain’s Andy Murry rose to new heights as he came from behind to beat Lleyton Hewitt and claim his first ATP Tour title in the SAP Open in San Jose.

The 18-year-old Scot, who also beat top seed Andy Roddick in the last four, rallied from a set down to win 2-6 6-1 7-6.

Murry had his serve broken three times in the opening set, but hit back superbly to race through the next.

In the third set Hewitt saved two match points with aces at 4-5 and 5-6 down to force a tie-break, but Murry took it 7-3 to clinch the greatest win of his career.

“To beat Lleyton 7-6 in the third set is a dream come true,” said Murry.

“I thought I played really well and got my tactics right, but didn’t execute them well in the first set.”

“This week has been perfect for me. This has been the best week of my life.”

A disappointed Hewitt, who has not won a title for 13 months, was magnanimous in his praise for Murry.

“I want to congratulate Andy on a fantastic tournament,” said the Australian.

“He has beaten top players all week and it’s always great to win an ATP Tour title.”

Murry’s reward for his efforts is a cheque for £30,000 and a place in the world’s top 50.
