Terry Seals It For Chelsea
Chelsea captain John Terry scored the only goal of the game to give his side a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United and a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Chelsea created the better chances, without looking entirely convincing, with Ricardo Carvalho missing from three yards, and Didier Drogba thwarted by Given on two occasions.
Newcastle’s Robbie Elliott was sent off late in the game for two bookable offences, though the second booking seemed to be harsh.
Alan Shearer, who later accused Shaun Wright-Phillips of diving to get Elliott sent off, will now end his Newcastle career without a trophy.
“It was a blatant dive,” said Shearer. “There was absolutely no contact and I thought so at the time.”
“I have seen it again on TV and it was definately the case.”
Newcastle manager Glen Roeder also criticised Wright-Phillips, saying: “Wright-Phillips made no attempt to run past him. I’m disappointed with the young man.”
Chelsea skipper John Terry said: “It was important to get a good start and we did. That set the tone.”
“It’s not about revenge for last year.”
“The most important thing is that we’re in the hat for the draw. We’re pleased to bounce back after a very disappointing result at the weekend.”
Newcastle boss Roeder said: “We showed a lot of spirit and produced some quality passing.”
“I’m perhaps disappointed that in and around the area we didn’t create enough clear cut chances to test their goalkeeper.”
“But we put up a really good show against the team that will be Premiership champions again this season. They are hot favourites for the Cup and deserve to be.”
