Late Penalty Gives Spurs Win
Robbie Keane’s late penalty gave Spurs a dramatic 2-1 victory over West Brom.
Spurs had trailed to Curtis Davies’ powerful first-half header and the Baggies were set for only their second away win of the season.
But Keane sent in a deft chip after Michael Carrick’s pass with 22 minutes remaining to pull Tottenham level.
And with the draw looming, West Brom’s keeper Tomasz Kuszczak hauled down Jermain Defoe in the box and Keane cooly converted the spot kick.
The result was tough on West Brom, whose stubborn and gutsy performance looked set to earn them a point.
Their manager Bryan Robson said: “Even when they equalised we were the better team but we shot ourselves in the foot. We do it every week it seems, what can I say?”
“We keep giving away bad goals and you just cannot do that.”
“We felt our forwards caused Spurs a problem but our problem is we cannot protect a lead.”
Tottenham’s boss Martin Jol said: “We needed three points, one was not good enough.”
“I think the first half an hour you can forget - we didn’t play at all. But after we changed with Aaron Lennon on the left, we played good football.”
“We didn’t score but then luckily enough we got the equaliser and then the winner so it was pretty exciting.”
