Crouch Ready For Macedonia

In form England striker Peter Crouch has warned Macedonia will provide a very different test to Andorra in Wednesday’s Euro 2008 qualifier in Skopje.

Crouch, who scored twice in England’s 5-0 demolition of Andorra on Saturday, said: “That was one of the strangest matches I have ever been involved in.”

“I certainly do not think Wednesday will be the same type of game.”

“Macedonia have more to offer. They will not sit back in their own half, they will try to make it tough for us.”

Crouch has now scored 10 goals in his last 10 games for Liverpool and England - with Old Trafford proving to be a particularly happy hunting ground.

In his last four games at Manchester United’s ground, he has scored eight times.

“I can’t explain my scoring record,” said the former Southampton striker.

“I suppose I do enjoy playing at Old Trafford but I love playing for England more.”

“A major factor is I am getting chances and I have always felt confident if opportunities do come my way, I will take them.”

“The width we play with helps as well, which is probably another reason why I have scored so many times recently.”

Crouch has also been impressed by his Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard’s form - and feels he will have a major part to play in England’s qualifying campaign.

“Steven has been the best player in the world for a long time,” said Crouch.

“I thought he was good when I first went to Liverpool but when you see him train, you realise he is even better.”

“You could play him in any position on the pitch, probably even goalkeeper, and he would still look good. He can do anything.”

“It is an absolute pleasure to be in the same team as him. I know Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has said Steven can get even better. All I can say is if he does, it will be a pretty frightening sight.”

Gerrrard will win his 50th cap against Macedonia and is delighted to reach the landmark.

The 26-year-old said: “I should have passed 50 caps a long time ago but injuries held me back - but I’m excited at getting to 50.”

He is enjoying his new role on the right flank for his country, adding: “As a footballer, the best comes out of you if you are enjoying the role you are being asked to play.”

“I wouldn’t say I ever got upset or depressed - I’ll try and do my best for the team no matter where I’m asked to play.”

“But it is nice for a manager to come and say be free and do what you do for your club, try to attack and get some assists and goals.

“I’m really looking forward to the future with Steve McClaren in charge.”
