Murray Splutters In The Rain At US Open
Britain’s number one Andy Murray will resume his US Open fourth-round match against Nikolay Davydenko on Wednesday after rain again hit Flushing Meadows.
The 19-year-old Scottish teenager had just gone two sets to one down on Tuesday when persistant rain began to fall.
Just one singles match was completed, with Jelena Jankovic beating Elena Dementieva in the women’s last eight.
The remaining three quarter-finals and all the men’s fourth round matches will now all be played on Wednesday.
The latest weather delay follows the tropical storm which hit New York last Friday and washed out the whole of Saturday’s play.
Aside from Murray’s match, there was one other men’s fourth round match in progress when the Tuesday’s drizzle arrived, with former champion Marat Safin leading Tommy Haas 2-1, with a break, in the opening set.
The bad weather may have come at the right time for Murray, who had just seen Davydenko come from a break down to clinch the third set 6-3.
The Russian had begun the match in blazing style, breaking Murray three times as he took the opening set 6-1.
The British number one hit back to take the second set 7-5 and raced to a 2-0 lead in the third before dropping five games in a row.
The rain delay gives Murray, who had been growing increasingly vocal and frustrated, a chance to talk over his tactics with coach Brad Gilbert in an attempt to turn things around on Wednesday.
